ROMAN HOLIDAY Marks, who represents 25 international artists at his namesake Chelsea gallery, frequently travels abroad for art fairs and studio visits. He recently attended a show of new work by British painter (and old friend) Gary Hume in Hannover, Germany. Afterward, the two decamped for a weekend in Rome.
HISTORY LESSON On this trip, Marks skipped most of Trastevere’s cutting-edge galleries and focused on the city’s Baroque and Renaissance treasures, such as Caravaggio’s Calling of Saint Matthew in San Luigi dei Francesi (5 Via Santa Giovanna d’Arco; 39-06/688-271). “When you stand in front of it, you know you’re experiencing the work the way the artist intended,” Marks explains.

PAST MASTERS “When I think about Rome, I think about Bernini, BorrominiÑall the things you can’t see anywhere else,” Marks says. “I love looking at the façades and fountains. It’s where architecture becomes sculpture.”
